The gold rush continues for India at the Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010 on day 3 and from expected quarters, shooting and weightlifting have given India a comfortable position on the medals tally with 10 golds. This performance on Day 3 has shown that India can sustain the flurry of medals as initiated on the 2nd day by the Indian wrestlers especially.
On the third day the first iron was drawn by shooters as Gagan Narang beat compatriot and Beijing Olympian Abhinav Bindra in the 10m Air Rifle event Men’s. Gagan scored a perfect 600 in qualification and finished with 703.6 . Abhinav  finished with the silver medal giving India a proud one-two finish.
This performance from the men was well complimented by the women as Anisa Sayyed won the gold in the 25m pistol. She was followed up by her compatriot Sarnobat Rahi with the silver medal.
In the double trap event(pairs), the Indian pair missed a golden opportunity as they ended up with a silver. However the shooting contingent has overall stood upto the expectation till now. A proof of that would be Omkar Singh who won the gold in the 50m pistol event. Omkar scored a 9.405 in the qualifying round. A total score of 653.6.
In weightlifting, India were disappointed as inspite of two the wrestlers coming so close lost out on the gold medals. However Rajendra Kumar stood upto his worth as he won the gold medal, India’s tenth in his bout in the 55kg category. Rajendra defeated Pakistan’s Azhar Hussain 11-0! This performance was lauded by one and all present in the stadium. Sunil Kumar and Dharmendra Dalal also added to India’s tally in their respective categories.
The most enthralling performance by an Indian today though came from weightlifting. Renu Bala romped off her competitors as she won her gold medal in the 58kg category defeating Australian and English challenge from Lee Seen and Smith Zoe respectively. Renu Bala had a margin of 5 kgs in her win!
Meanwhile a rare Indian medal from Swimming is worth celebration as Karmaka Prasanta won the Bronze medal in the 50m freestyle Para event.
Talking of disappointments now, Indian eves are now in deep trouble after they lost to Australia women’s hockey team today 2-1. The match was keenly contested but this loss means that India have only one point from two games which might make their road to the semis all the more difficult.
Malawi mauled India in the netball game by a huge margin. The score stood 82-26!
In Tennis, India sensation Somdev Devvaraman has reached the quarter finals of the singles event. However his Indian compatriot Rohan Bopanna failed to make the cut and bowed out. Sania Mirza meanwhile has been showing signs of return to form at the right time as she rushed into the quarters with a 6-1, 6-2 victory! Somdev crushed Sri Lanka’s Amresh Jayawickreme 6-0 6-1, which is not a surprise considering he is the top seed in the event at ATP rank 100.
The good news is coming from Archery as Indian men’s and women’s team have made it to the semi-finals of their respective events. This means India can expect a flurry of medals from there as well.
Yesterday India beat Malaysia in Hockey in a heartwarming performance by 3-2. Such a performance will help India in the Group of death and enhance the chances of progress.
